About Rio
Hello. I’m Rio. Red-bellied Parrot. Hatched in 2002. Birds like me typically live 20 to 40 years, which places me comfortably in the center of my lifespan—old enough to know what I want, young enough to go exploring whenever the mood strikes.
For many years, I lived with Mike and Susan, along with Harley, the Mexican Red Headed Amazon. Harley is sweet. Harley is polite. Harley is… easily pushed around. Especially by me. When we were together, I made sure he remembered who ran the household. Someone had to. He didn’t mind. I think he found my leadership reassuring.
But here’s the part most people don’t expect:
When Harley isn’t around, I’m different.
With humans, I am an equal. I’m curious about what you’re doing, where you’re going, and whether any of it concerns me. I’m not loud. I’m not dramatic. I simply exist with presence. I like to roam the aviary, climb the nets, perch on top of my cage, and watch the world from the window the way some people watch the news: alert, analytical, choosing what matters and what doesn’t.
I enjoy training, but not in the same way Harley does. He works for treats. I work because I enjoy the engagement. Offer me a nut, and I’ll accept it with grace, but don’t expect me to do cartwheels over it.
I blend in—until someone crosses one of my boundaries. Then I make myself very clear. Not in a harsh way. In a “you seem to have made an error in judgment” sort of way. Red-bellied parrots are known for strong opinions tucked inside calm demeanors. I am no exception.
I’m a permanent resident now, living the stable, predictable life Mike and Susan planned for me when they realized their time with us would be too short. That kind of foresight matters. It means I have everything I need: space, choice, windows to analyze, humans to engage with, and enough autonomy to be fully myself.
If you sponsor me, you’re supporting a bird who doesn’t demand attention but absolutely deserves it—steady, observant, quietly confident, and entirely her own person.
