About Kali

Hello. I’m Callie. Black-headed Caique. Hatched in 2016. Birds like me typically live 25 to 40 years, which puts me in the early years of my life—still young, still fierce, and still very much the little warrior nature intended me to be.

Caiques are known as the clowns of the parrot world, but that description is only half the truth. Yes, we are funny. Yes, we hop, tumble, wrestle, and entertain. But beneath the silliness sits something older and far more serious. We are the front-line alarm system of the forest. Small, fast, territorial, and astonishingly brave. That is why black-headeds, in particular, are sometimes called the warriors of the parrot world. We are not ornamental. We are strategic.

My name, Callie, comes from the Hindu goddess Kali—the goddess of destruction and fierce protection. It fits.

I came from a couple up north who had previously shared their lives with cockatiels. They thought a caique might be a fun next step, and in some ways, they were right. I am fun. I’m bright, athletic, expressive, and capable of deep attachment. But they were not told the truth in plain language: caiques do not “sort of” choose people. We choose decisively. And when we dislike someone, we do not disguise it.

I chose one partner.
I rejected the other.
Completely.

During breeding season, my instincts sharpened. My species evolved to drive off threats, so my behavior became strategic: rapid attacks, targeted strikes, attempts to control distance and territory. And yes, when caiques go for the eyes, it isn’t random. It is instinct. It is how we neutralize predators in the wild. We mean business.

Most homes cannot manage that reality, and that’s not because we are bad birds—it’s because we were never meant to be gentle all-purpose pets. We were meant to defend, intimidate, and protect the flock.

The couple realized this. They researched. They found Parrot Partners. And that is how I entered the placement program.

Caiques are not placed lightly. We require a home that understands our boundaries, our drive, our strategic minds, and our need to spar socially with the people we love. Yes—spar. We play-fight the way our ancestors practiced for survival. If I choose you, I will adore you. I will be affectionate, funny, engaging, and deeply connected. But if I do not choose you, you are simply a sparring partner. And you need to honor that distinction.

I’m not unpredictable. I’m honest. I show you exactly who I am.

If you sponsor me, you’re supporting a bird who embodies the extraordinary truth of parrots: that we are not ornaments. We are complex, ancient creatures carrying instincts far older than human homes.

And when I love someone, I love them with my whole heart.
