About Mad Max

Hello. I’m Max. Black-headed Caique. Hatched in 2010. Birds like me typically live 25 to 40 years, which puts me solidly in my prime—athletic, sharp, and carrying the instincts my species perfected long before humans ever thought to keep parrots as companions.

I came to PPC in 2015, when I was five years old. That is prime warrior age for a caique. And make no mistake: beneath the clown routines, caiques are the warriors of the parrot world. The front-line defenders. When danger appears, other parrots flee. We confront.

That instinct is part of me.

Before PPC, I lived in a daycare—a tough place for a bird built to interpret sudden movement as threat. Children ran, squealed, dropped toys, startled easily. They unintentionally trained my brain to pair “child” with “danger.” Once that pairing forms in a caique, instinct takes over. The daycare saw that as misbehavior. PPC understood it as miscommunication.

Here, they rebuilt everything from the ground up.

Through patient counter-conditioning, through positive experiences with children, through trust-building done the right way, I learned that small humans are not predators. I learned that new faces can be safe. I learned that calm is possible, even in a busy world.

Today, I am one of PPC’s education ambassadors. I attend school programs and public events. I am steady as long as the handler beside me understands my body language and respects my thresholds.

But my training is not “finished.” Parrots don’t come with finish lines. They come with lifelong learning.

Two skills I’m still working on are:
• taking juice from a syringe calmly
• returning to my cage on cue without hesitation

These skills matter. They help with medical care. They help with safety. They reduce stress for both bird and human.

And this is where you come in.

If you visit the aviary and would like to help, the trainers will guide you through the process gently and correctly. You’ll be part of shaping a bird who has already rewritten one chapter of his life and is ready to write more. You will help me associate new hands, new faces, and new cues with calm, predictability, and positive outcomes.

I am Max.
I am a caique.
I am fierce by design and loving by choice.
And I welcome those who want to help me continue growing.
